'Fore' Get Me Not Golf

What glorious weather we had on Thursday!

We thoroughly enjoyed getting out on the course in the warm sunshine, and I'm sure that added to everyone's enjoyment of the golf.

We had two very close competitions with only 3 shots covering the field of 6 golfers over two holes, and a three way tie in the putting competition which was settled by a nearest the pin shootout.

The winner on the course was Iain (second from the left) and the champion putter was Bob (third from the left).
More important than the trophies was that everyone thoroughly enjoyed the afternoon.

Lots of tea, coffee and cake were consumed by all, and lots of chat and social time enjoyed by the non-golfers.
We look forward to seeing everyone again on 5 November.

COURSE UPDATE
Please can we remind members regarding the use of mats.

Mats must be used in areas that are at fairway height or lower.

- In social golf: please feel free to use a mat anywhere in the General Area. That is everywhere except for Bunkers, Tees, Greens and Penalty Areas.

- In Competitions: mats may only be used on fairways or closely mown areas. If you cannot determine whether you are on a fairway or in the rough, please consult with your playing partners before making a decision.

Cleaning Trolley Wheels on Artificial Paths

Could we please remind members that the new pathways are not for cleaning trolley wheels on.

We have received reports over the last week that some members have been letting their electric trolley wheels spin against the path surface to clean the wheels.

Please can we ask that members refrain from doing this.
Birdy of the Week

Subtle changes in the weather can make surprisingly rapid changes to bird migration and this was well illustrated last Wednesday afternoon. The wind had been blowing from the west, when it veered around to a gentle northerly and this resulted in the arrival of a male Ring Ouzel, which dropped down into the gorse along the cliff path by the seventh fairway. It had clearly just flown in off the North Sea and decided to make landfall on the course, probably the first land it had seen since departing from Scandinavia earlier in the day.

Ring Ouzels are summer visitors that breed on the mountains and uplands of northern England, Wales and Scotland, as well as in Fennoscandia, wintering in southern Europe and north-west Africa. Their nests are built in hollows on the ground, under bushes, in rock crevices or holes in the walls of old buildings, often near a moorland stream. Sadly, there has been a progressive decline in breeding numbers and range contraction since the early 20th century.

Despite their wariness, males, at least, are easy to recognize, even if seen only briefly or at a distance. About the size of a Blackbird but longer winged, the male is entirely black apart from a broad white crescent across the breast and pale edges to the flight feathers. The female is more similar to a female Blackbird but with scaly underparts and often only a suggestion of a pale buff breast band.

Autumn passage typically occurs in September and October, so keep a look out for these ‘Mountain Blackbirds’, as they are known in Scotland, as they feed on the grassy areas of the course, but they are extremely wary and often the first indication of their presence is their distinct ‘tchak tchak’ alarm call, as they fly away.
Coastal Path

As many members will know, some renovation work will be taking place on the coastal path shortly.  They will be using the land at the back of the 14th green for their compound and the contractors will be working on the west side of Skelding Hill up until the end of the year.  In early 2027, they will then begin the renovation work on the East side of Skelding Hill where their compound will be situated by the boating lake, behind the 3rd tee.

Hugo Caswell Wins Junior Open at Royal Cromer

A fantastic performance from Hugo Caswell, who made a last minute decision to enter the Cromer Junior Open and came away with a brilliant victory.

Playing in seriously tough conditions, with winds reaching around 25mph. Despite the conditions, he produced a superb round and made the difficult test look comfortable.

Hugo carded a gross 86, just 14 over par, and finished with an excellent 42 Stableford points to take the title in a strong field of 80 juniors.

Congratulations to all our juniors that participated.

Rule of the Week

Model Local Rule E-12 is in operation and Mats are compulsory. Eric and Jeff are playing the 9th hole at Sheringham in a Match Play event. They both hit great drives onto the fairway.

However, Jeff plays first but forgets to use his mat.

Eric claims the hole. Jeff says that it is only a 2 shot penalty.

Who was correct?

Answer at the end of the newsletter.
UPCOMING EVENTS
Wednesday Night Food

If you wish to take advantage of the food offerings for Wednesday Night, booking ahead of time is essential.

The kitchen may close early on this night, if there are no bookings between 5.00pm and 7.30pm.

Answer: Eric was correct - Jeff has played from a ‘wrong place’ (Rule 14.7) and the penalty in Match Play is loss of hole
 - In Stroke Play, the penalty would be 2 shots (providing it was a genuine mistake and not a serious breach of the rules)
